10 Things Ship Crew Members Need in Cruise Ship Quarantine

Since the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic and the return of the cruising, a lot of new regulations and procedures have been introduced to cruise ship employees, including a mandatory cruise ship quarantine upon joining the ship.

Although cruise lines follow different policies, a mandatory quarantine is a common one. Quarantine is not only required upon arrival to the ship but also if a crew member gets in touch with a person who was tested positive on coronavirus.

While in cruise ship quarantine, crew members get room service as they are not allowed to leave the room, and they normally stay in a guest cabin with a balcony or a window.

Even though there are some online trainings and other required duties to be done by every ship crew member, there is some free time to enjoy as well.

Here is my list of the items every ship crew member should have while in quarantine!

1. Snacks

The quarantine food varies by ship, however, I highly recommend you bring some extra snacks such as nuts, crisps, dry fruit, energy bars… You will need plenty of energy and the ship food is not really a quality one, so I suggest you bring snacks and food with high nutritional value.

Crew members can normally buy snacks in a slop chest (every cruise ship has at least one), a crew shop where you can buy the essentials. However, this shop is (in most cases) more expensive than regular shops and the choices are limited, so I definitely suggest you bring your own snacks.

2. Extra Medication/Vitamins

Cruise ships have medical facilities, however, some of them are not well equipped so you might not find the medication you need. Therefore, it is essential that you bring extra medication as you probably won’t be allowed to go ashore and get some in a pharmacy.

Make sure you bring a lot of vitamins and supplements, such as activated charcoal, Centrum multivitamin, Zink, vitamins A, D, C, B… To save money, it’s wise to purchase an economy pack as cruise ship contracts are quite long and you will need plenty of these.

To organize your medication and vitamins, take a look at this handy pill organizer – You can get it for $6 on Amazon!

3. Laptop

Upon joining the ship, you will be required to do a lot of online trainings in quarantine and the best way to complete them is on a computer.

The majority of cruise lines provide their crew with free internet for a limited time and to fully enjoy it, I suggest you bring a laptop to watch movies or anything that entertains you.

Unfortunately, the internet is very slow sometimes so make sure you download movies before you come as you might not be able to do it with ship’s internet.

My choice is always Apple MacBook Air as it’s light and compact, not to mention its incredible features and performances.

4. HDMI Cable

Cruise ship cabins are equipped with a TV and to connect it to a laptop, don’t forget to bring a high-speed HDMI cable!

However, note that some cruise lines might have the HDMI cable option disabled.

5. Ear Pods

Earbuds are a must-have, regardless of whether you are in a cruise ship quarantine or not. You’ll need them in the gym, in your crew cabin (remember that most of the crew cabins are double shared, so you don’t have much privacy), or outside in the port.

6. JBL Speaker

I don’t go anywhere without my JBL GO2 portable speaker! I used to play my favorite music on it every time I had a crew cabin for myself and I loved bringing it to my favorite places ashore. You can play your favorite music in quarantine while soaking up the sun and enjoying gorgeous sunsets from your balcony cabin.

7. Book

You will have plenty of free time during the quarantine, so a good book (or books) is always a great idea to keep you entertained and occupied. I like psychological thrillers, mysteries and that sort of genre, but you can pick your own and enjoy reading while taking in beautiful sunset views from your cabin.

You can find great deals on Amazon (Amazon normally delivers the orders directly to the ships in US ports) or you can bring the books of your own.

8. Kindle

If you are an avid reader, bringing several books onboard can take up plenty of space in your cabin and luggage. That’s why I personally prefer to bring Kindle, as it can store a lot of books and save space as it’s small, compact and practical.

9. Hard Drive

You will need plenty of movies to keep you entertained and therefore you’ll need a hard drive with a large memory!

Recommended:

Seagate Portable 2TB External Hard Drive Portable HDD – USB 3.0 for PC, Mac, PlayStation, & Xbox

10. Hand Sanitizers

Even though cruise ships’ surfaces are thoroughly cleaned and sanitized, you should always bring a few packs of alcohol-based hand sanitizers. Health is the top priority for both guests and crew, especially when you spend over 7 months onboard.

Recommended:

Suave Hand Sanitizer Alcohol-Based Kills 99.9% of Germs 10 oz, Pack of 6
